A need is defined as a requirement that is essential or very important. Every leader has needs that when met will cause them to thrive and flourish as a leader, yet when they go unmet these same leaders will limp lifelessly and flounder in your church or organization.
The key for you and I to thrive as leaders is discovering what these very important essentials are. They are different for everyone, but it can be defined by asking yourself a simple question:
WHAT DO YOU NEED FROM THE LEADER YOU’RE FOLLOWING?
I used to know the answer to this question at the drop of a hat, but as seasons change in your life, sometimes the answer to this question changes. As simple as this question was I didn’t have and immediate answer! I was stumped because I knew what it used to be, but I had no idea what I needed in the now.
Much like the book 5 Love Languages that sheds insight on how to fill the “love tank” of your mate, all of us have a leadership language that fills and fuels our leadership life. When our leadership tanks are on empty we are frustrated and confused, but when they are filled we are flourishing and thriving. For a long time my answer to the question above was solely vision. If I had vision from my leader I could run, implement and make the vision a reality. However, in an organization where there is no shortage of vision and change is a common practice, though I didn’t notice my need for it until the question was asked of me, I need clear communication. Clarity and vision go hand in hand, but vision by itself was not causing me to thrive as a leader as it had in the past.
“Write the vision and make it plain on tablets…” Habakkuk 2:2
I still need vision, but I’m even a better leader when the vision is communicated with clarity.
Like me, you may be missing something that is very important and essential to your success in the organization where you are currently serving and leading. Ask yourself the question; “What do I currently need from the leader I’m following?”
The answer to this question is a key for you becoming a thriving leader right where you are at!
