I love to write, blog, upload a pic on Instagram, send a shout out on Twitter and post the latest happenings in my life on Facebook, but these last two weeks of the year I like to unplug from it all. It does my mind, body, soul and spirit well to unplug from the unnecessary and really focus on what I need for my personal well being.
Here are just a few things I will do in the next couple of weeks that will help and I hope it can help you.
- Focus on my relationship with Jesus Christ – I spent the last hour looking at all the church highlights from services all my friends and family were a part of on my Facebook feed. We all went to the best church and experienced the best service, so you can’t get much better than that. We were pretty awesome yesterday! Today though I will shift my focus and begin to assess my relationship with Jesus. Not that I only take time to reflect on my relationship with God this time of year, but especially this time of year. Does my life reflect the reason why Jesus came? Am I doing what God wants me to do? Am I going where He wants me to go? What are you saying to me? These are just some of the questions I will ponder.
- Focus on my family & friendships. This is the first Christmas Josiah is “back home from college” so I’ll be taking extra time with family, watching Mariah’s basketball games which I love, and hanging out with Amy knowing that our kids will be out and about most of the time and we will be wishing they were home. Star Wars could be in the mix, a few dinner outings and some coffee dates with friends. I love connecting and reflecting with family friends this time of year.
- Focus on my personal goals. I will actually start forming some goals for the New Year. This is a process that will overflow into January, but I will start my year off with extended fasting and prayer for clarity. I will create a 2016 reading list which I will let everyone know about through my blog in the new year. I will take time to set spiritual growth & physical health goals (I plan on running my first 1/2 marathon in March). I will also take time to evaluate my vocational goals as well. All in all I’ll come up with 5 BHAGs (Big Hairy Audacious Goals) to pursue in 2016 that will cover those different areas of my life.
To sharpen my focus I will unplug from everything else. I wont get worked up over anything not getting worked up over and I won’t worry about things that don’t need to be worried about. After today you wont see a blog post until the New Year, you probably wont see much activity from me on social media other than family & friend moments, and if you see me around I’ll probably be wearing a sweat outfit with a hat on. I’m going to UNPLUG!
Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!
