In leadership unnecessary things happen to leaders when the necessary things for leadership are ignored. Companies implode, churches die, families’ fracture, followers scatter, and leaders are destroyed.
As a leader there are some non-negotiable necessities you must take along with you on your leadership journey.
Encouragement – You must have a source of encouragement. It can be a person or it can be a podcast, but you have to find a source where you can continually tap into encouragement. Leaders need massive courage to do what God has called them to do and your leadership role is not an exception to the rule. If you have led anyone or anything you have undoubtedly come face to face with discouragement. Discouragement is only defeated in a leader’s life when they deliberately surround themselves with winning voices that build them up even when things seem to be breaking down all around them.
A Lifestyle of Learning – A leader that is not learning is not growing. Leadership requires a hunger and desire to learn. The necessity to learn directly affects a leader’s capacity to lead. Leaders that don’t cultivate a lifestyle of learning often learn the hard way, frequently take the long way, and repeatedly do things the wrong way.
Community – Isolation is the number one killer of leaders today. The pressures that come with any leadership role can separate leaders from the strength one finds in community. When a leader connects to community he or she opens their lives to accessing others who can help them in a time of weakness, temptation or need. For example when a leader connects with a man of wisdom, the man’s strength of wisdom becomes the leader’s strength. A lot of leaders are disconnected from strength because they’ve disconnected themselves from community.
These necessities for leadership were at one time easy to ignore because they were so difficult to find for leaders. However, with technology at our fingertips connecting to meaningful community has been made much more accessible.
For this reason I have the privilege as the Director of Leadership Development at Jesus Culture to announce the launching of our Jesus Culture Online Community for those leading in the church, campus or culture that have a desire to see their cities and nations transformed. From the stay-at-home mom gathering young mothers in her neighborhood to the CEO of the fortune 500 company the JCLC will provide weekly encouragement from Banning Liebscher, featured interviews with key leaders, current leadership articles, LIVE Q & A calls and more to equip leaders with the necessities of leadership we believe every leader must have.
